National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Monday called on Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo state to find solution to the lingering industrial crises that have crippled some of the state-owned tertiary institutions.

Specifically, NANS appealed to Ajimobi to intervene in the crises between lecturers of the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo and Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora and their management which has led to prolonged strike.

Mr. Moronkola Teslim Abiola, the Oyo State Chairman of NANS, who made this call in a statement made available in Ibadan yesterday, lamented that students of the affected institutions have waited endlessly for peaceful resolution of the crises and resumption of academic activities on their campuses.

NANS maintained that utmost consideration should be given to the future of their colleagues who have been exposed to all forms of dangers since they left school as a result of the strike.

According to the statement, six tertiary institutions in the state had begun strike few months ago but some of them called it off after their agitation for increased subvention had been granted by the state government.

The statement reads in part: “It is however sad that Emmanuel Alayande College of Education and Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology, Igboora could not resume with other institutions.

“At Emmanuel Alayande, the management said it could not add 20 per cent to the 80 per cent subvention given to them by the state government to enable them pay workers’ salaries.

“We hereby call on Governor Ajimobi to intervene by prevailing on the management of the institutions to pay the accumulated salaries of their workers so as to save the future of the students who are roaming the streets”.

">

“Nigerian students in these institutions have exhausted their patience as their hope of resuming their studies has been dashed several times. The future of these students and possible harm they could cause if they protest should be given utmost consideration.”
