The Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) DAKA Foundation, Dr kazeem Adesina Abidikugu has cautioned residents of Oyo state, particularly Ibadan, the state capital against dumping of refuse in drains, gutters and rivers, saying the action could aggravate the problem of flooding in the state.
He noted that flooding is associated with incessant rainfall being witnessed in the state in the last few weeks.
Abidikugu, a Nigerian UK-based Consultant Psychiatrist maintained that irrespective of the volume of rainfall, water would still flow through the drains and discharge into the various channels and rivers but noted that with refuse dump within drains, gutters and rivers itself will resulted into flooding.
“I want to caution residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other acts that could aggravate flooding, such as indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drains, gutters and rivers.
“Even apart from flooding indiscriminate dumping of refuse within the residential areas also posses danger to human health, which could result into various illness.
“I want to use this medium to appeal to our people to stop dumping of refuse into places that could cause hazard to human life. As we are witnessing incessant rainfall, it is advisable for people to dump their refuse at various locations set aside by government for such usage”.
It could be recalled that in the year past many residents of the state were rendered homeless including lost of lives when some areas were flooded during a downpour in the state.
